Items With China Elements Enjoys Large Popularity

Many designers are using China related elements into their products design. It seems that both Chinese and westerner would like pattern and style with China features. The fact is true based on the market response for many products sales such as dinner set, curtain fabric and lingerie.

Dinner Set

China Inspiration. Patterns featuring a distinct taste of the Orient are huge for the home in 2008. Look for rich orange, gold and red trimmed patterns that will make a bold statement on your table. One to watch for is Wedgwood’s new Dynasty pattern. The white bone china body has a salad plate decorated with brilliant orange Asian tigers, while the dinner plates feature a crackled chocolate brown border and gold detailing. Simply gorgeous!

Curtain Fabric

Regarding the best items to choose. We have done the homework for you, providing you with excellent tips that will make choosing easier.

Bishop Sleeves - Elegant window treatment that has a rod pocket curtain with extra length used for blousing. Used with tiebacks, bishop sleeves help frame a window. The best type of curtain fabric is literally anything that would create a soft, draping fold.

Craft curtains - Typically used in kitchens, craft curtains have a piece of fabric stretched between two thin rods. Although you can again use any type of curtain fabric, cotton, chenille, and lace are all great choices.

Grommet Top Curtains - These curtains are hung from eyelets sewn into the fabric on the top. These curtains look great with both rustic and contemporary furnishings. As far as curtain fabric, you would need to choose what matches the room. For example, for something casual, you could use heavier cotton while for a rich, sophisticated room, velvet or even tapestry.

Priscilla Curtains - Make extra wide with ruffled tiebacks, you typically see Priscilla curtains made from curtain fabric that is light such as cotton.

Sexy Lingerie

Chinese lingerie market is a dynamic sector. Their market structure is composed of many national and international brands, and intimate apparels are brought in by many countries; names unknown to the consumer. The country's lingerie market is a fast moving one, and there is a drastic change during the recent past.

China is a key player in fabric industry, having good potential for creation and consumption. Major lingerie players in China have reassessed their market positions, and are now closing the knowledge gap to become 'low cost' producers.

Imagine That…(1) - the Asian Angel of Mercy and Assassins

By Carl “J.C.” Pantejo, Copyright May 2008

Author “My Friend Yu – The Prosperity Mentor,” Copyright August 2007. Pantejo - Y.N. Vurce Publishing.

*The following story is incorporated in “My Friend Yu – the Prosperity Mentor: Book II,” Pantejo - Y.N. Vurce Publishing. Release Date: 2008.

**Note from the Author:

When asked about my military career, I simply tell people that I was “Dumb, Stubborn, and Lucky (Dumb enough to volunteer, Stubborn enough to stay, and Lucky enough to survive).”

The “Imagine That…” series chronicles some of the more amusing experiences (that I can still remember) from over two decades of U.S. military service; most of which was in the Asian theater.

But, please keep in mind the following conversation:

Curious Man: “What did you learn from your years in the military?”

Me: “The first and last thing they teach you is to forget.”

Curious Man: “Who are they and what were you supposed to forget?”

Me: “I don’t know. I forgot.”

Curious Man: “I see. You must have been a good student.”

Me: “I’d like to think so.”

The above conversation gives a clue why some things will neither be mentioned, nor explained in some of the stories of this series.

Simply put, I forgot.

Nevertheless, I am certain you will enjoy these stories, my friend.

Carl “J.C.” Pantejo

“[Life] Amazing! Isn’t it?”

- Asian Angel of Mercy -

Assuming that I’d not heard her the first time, she repeated, “Chief, is there anything else I can do for you?”

She was a 19 year old Fil-Am (Filipina-American) who had recently graduated from Basic U.S. Navy Corpsman School. She was doing her mandatory clinical phase/rounds aboard this Navy Submarine Tender (a ship equipped with hyperbaric chamber facilities), the ship I’d been flown to almost 20 hours ago for hyperbaric treatment. I had just finished a Table VI (or V?) treatment in the “squeeze chamber” and was on the ship’s tiny medical sickbay cum ward.

The cute Corpsman had assumed correctly.

(And what a sweet ass-sumption it was! But I stray from the story. Many tangents will follow.)

I hadn’t heard a word of what she said since reporting to her ward. I was too enamored with her brown skin, almond eyes, and oh-so-slim and sexy body. Most other bodily functions were put on hold – except of course, you know what.

Us men are like that.

When I arrived at the Tender yesterday night, via emergency MEDEVAC (medical evacuation) helicopter, I was semi-conscious and clad in only my dive shorts (the Navy issued “UDT”, khaki-colored shorts worn by all U.S. military divers, Special Warfare, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Teams) and wrapped in a couple of black wool blankets to combat the coldness of shock.

The helo crew and medical attendants were more than happy to release/dump me on the Diving doctor at the Tender. Apparently, and later verified by the official medical reports, I was so disoriented and obstinate that I tried to free myself from the gurney straps and jump out of the MEDEVAC helo… not once, but three times!

Luckily the attendants were consummate professionals; and although they couldn’t sedate me (sedation masked symptomatic alterations of consciousness and rendered further neurological checks useless), they nonetheless; “motivated” me to behave.

They did this by menacingly waving a large urethral catheter in front of my face while simultaneously snapping the bases of their surgical gloves! The meaning was instantly understood: “Chief, play nice or we’ll have to shove this rubber tube up your crank; AND/OR perform a sphincter muscle control check. BOTH WITHOUT LUBRICATION!”

Prudently, I acquiesced to these kind and caring medical professionals.

Most divers “free-balled” it.

We didn’t wear anything under our dive shorts. It was much more comfortable and practical. At least that’s what we’d rationalized as we pissed and crapped in our shorts during long dives, or scratched sand from our balls while on the beach.

Of course, we were more disciplined during cold water dives that required a wet or dry suit be worn over our dive shorts.

Fantasizing about the Filipina Corpsman, I was pitching a rather obvious tent under the bed sheets.

The Corpsman blushed as she took my vital signs.

She went about her business as professionally as possible (temperature, pulse, and blood pressure checks, I.V. drip check, neurological/circulation checks, level of consciousness checks, etc.) while still managing to steal glances, and sometimes longer looks, at my erection.

Probably projecting my wishes upon her, I could swear she looked hungry.

- Too much of a “Good Thing” -

She asked me if I was experiencing “priapism,” a medical condition characterized by an uncontrollable erection and can be caused by trauma to the spinal cord, various drugs, neurological disorders, and vascular diseases.

Prolonged priapism can be a medical emergency because the human penis was not meant to be perpetually engorged. The specialized, sensitive tissues can be permanently damaged or necrose (die). The condition is considered hazardous after three hours, critical after four hours, and a medical emergency after five or six hours (depending on the patient’s age and physical condition).

The treatment for priapism begins with mild, over-the-counter medication (e.g., pseudoephedrine). If that doesn’t work, treatment becomes more aggressive.

To make your erection go away, blood is aspirated from the corpus cavernosum (a reservoir for blood and pressure). Layman’s translation: The doctor sticks a needle in your dick and tries to deflate it by relieving the build-up of pressure. Sound fun?

Finally to the final of all options, if all else fails – AMPUTATION OF THE PENIS IS NECESSARY. Yikes!

That’s why the abuse of erectile dysfunction drugs (e.g., Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, etc.) can literally cost a man his own manhood!

“Unlike the mind, a penis stretched by new stimuli MUST return to its original size.”

I had only experienced priapism once in my life. It happened a few years ago after a rather nasty PLF (Parachute Landing Fall)…

…I couldn’t “John Wayne” it in (meaning: a trotting, stand-up landing) because we, my Jump Team on the stick, were jumping with old Army “Set 10” parachutes. These chutes were big, awkward to steer, and were made for average, “American-sized” men carrying full Army Infantry gear.

Everyone on my team was Asian or Hispanic and much smaller than the average American soldier. To make matters worse, we weren’t wearing any Infantry gear. That meant we were using parachutes designed for much bigger men and much heavier loads.

Why?

Although I wasn’t paid to ask why (I was paid to Do), I figured that someone, probably a Department of Defense scientist/geek working on his thesis and/or government contract, needed the data. And of course, we volunteered for the two weeks of “basket leave (free vacation)” and additional “Experimental/Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay” upon mission completion.

Besides, what could happen?

We were all well-versed in jumping. We all wore the gaudy, golden “Jump Wings” on our uniforms. The Jump Wings and shiny, silver “Dive Bubble” (the Navy SCUBA Diver pin worn above the wings) proclaimed to all that we were loony enough to be free-fall qualified and macho/horny enough to be Navy Diver certified.

And of course, in our minds, we (my team mates, fellow connoisseurs of beer, PT - physical training, women, and out-of-the ordinary adventures) were all crazy, little f*ckers – a batch of brown escapees from the local Mental Ward.

In short, multiple incarnations of Superman.

Oftentimes, hushed words were spoken from onlookers when one of us was seen in our uniforms.

I never got used to all the attention. In fact, all the hoo-hah about divers, jumpers, and shooters usually made me feel uncomfortable. When someone asked too many probing questions, I would find an excuse to quickly leave.

Perfectly happy doing my job out of the limelight, I performed my duties as professionally and quietly as possible. Yup, being “invisible” was just fine with me.

It’s always the shiny, “special” things (or people) that become targets first.

To my knowledge, there is Only One photo of me in my “work clothes and green/brown make-up” in existence. It (with other documents and computer files) is in the custody of a very trusted friend; safely tucked away in an Old Wooden desk, in an old Asian village home, in an old and remote Asian Province. And there it will stay until enough time has passed and I don’t need “insurance” anymore.

All smart people have insurance.

‘Nuff said about that.

- Wannabes and Groupies -

Most of the other “normal, honorable, respectable” soldiers envied the lifestyle I and my men lived everyday.

To them, we were all Desperados.

It was a well-known fact that we enjoyed more p*ssy, more money, and more excitement than the usual serviceman. On top of that, we wore our uniforms less frequently and enjoyed more individual freedom on the job.

Those men who “look, want, but can’t” are affectionately called “Wannabes.”

And the women, oh the women.

There were two types of “Groupie Women.” The first type, the Thrill Seekers, got off by having sex with us “dangerous, young studs.” The other type, the Gold Digger, was looking for security (meaning, the money and security left by a deceased serviceman spouse).

If a woman thought “we were what we were,” the usual response followed: Instant Flirting. Her pupils would enlarge, she’d heave whatever chest she had, she’d fiddle with her hair, smile, and lick her lips. You could almost read her mind. She wanted to sample the athletic, wiry, six-packed, muscular bodies we all possessed.

Our hardbodies coupled with our permanent, devilish, sh*t-eating grins that seemed to make all of us look half our ages were most irresistible to the overtly (and covertly) available members of the opposite sex.

Gold Diggers are available around the globe and the U.S. was no exception. Everyone knew of the SGLI (the soldier’s life insurance) and Death Gratuity Benefits extended to the dead soldier’s family/beneficiaries.

Since people like me and my men tended to die from mysterious “Training Injuries” much more often than the normal guy riding a desk job, we were all that more attractive to the “long-range minded women.”

It’s “The Golden Rule.”

Same-same around the world, I guess. Those with the Gold/Money (or the promise of it) rule!

“Don’t mess with THEM. They’d rather kill than f*ck!,” one young sailor said to another while I was standing in line at the Base’s Mini-Mart.

On the very few occasions that I went shopping in my uniform, when I would walk toward a crowd of shoppers, the reaction was like the parting of the Red Sea.

It was weird.

If you saw me in person and in civilian clothes, you’d probably think I was someone’s meek, Asian driver or cook. But put a uniform on me, replete with those two “itty-bitty” pins, and I’m magically transformed into some mysterious, dark-hearted assassin?

Assassin?

The word assassin brings a wry smile to my face. You see, its root comes from the word “Hassassin” – meaning, followers/users of hashish.

Neat story.

Well, actually, many stories revolve around the word “assassin.”

Some references reinforce the etymology of “assassin” from “hassassin;” while others refute it, saying that:

1.The Koran and the creator of the Hassassins group staunchly opposed all intoxicating chemicals (e.g., alcohol, hashish, etc.).

2.Trained killers require disciplined training, and therefore; could not have been drug addicts.

3.Hashish in the form of a “potion” (that is, liquid form) and mentioned below in the famous “Marco Polo” accounts of the assassins and their leader is not the normal form of ingestion.

But let me include two other stories.

And they both involve killers and hashish.

The first story, popularized by Marco Polo, tells of the “Old Man of the mountain” (believed to be Hasan-i-Sabbah, leader of the Nizari Ismaili militant group) using a “potion” of hashish as a recruiting tool.

Supposedly, he drugged prospective recruits and brought them to a “Paradise” that he’d setup in a secret, secluded compound. Once there, the recruits were provided anything and everything they desired (wine, women, song, etc.). Soon after, they were drugged again and brought back before the Leader.

He [the Leader] promised them a trip to Paradise again if they served him (or died in his service). Either way, if they completed their service, they (or their souls) were guaranteed a return to Paradise.

The second story involves enemies of the Crusaders.

During the Crusades, a group of small, but deadly armies meandered through the lands to defend the populace from the Christian Marauders (Crusaders).

Their ruthlessness and efficiency with which they dealt out death became legendary. After each successful defense (killing fest), these men would then perform their routine, celebratory ritual – a party and trance induced by heavy hashish use.

They soon became known as “Hassassins.” Over time, the word changed into “assassin.”

When I was in Laos, I often wondered if the cute purveyors (and tourists/ buyers) of those innocent looking, little, dark-brown-to-black cubes knew the hashish-“assassin” word connection?

Probably not.

The Yin and Yang of Asian Décor

Who says you would need a salary’s worth of savings to explore the tranquil mysticism of Asia? With a few renovations and some bits and pieces here and there, you can transform your own living spaces with a look that reflects the calm mood of a Thai spa or a minimalist-inspired Japanese home. Although various cultures contrast, these different Asian countries come together with similar design schemes. It’s a usual practice nowadays for people to embrace the key elements from each cultural area. They arrange it together in a blend that is truly and spectacularly Asian and truly unique at the same time.

Now before you begin chasing after silk draperies and Chinese jars, there are some teeny-weeny details you should think about first.

Will you swear to trim down all the excess clutter in your home? Are you willing to denounce your chaotic space for something relatively free of unnecessary "stuff"?

Are you into smooth furnishings? How about upholstery and windows minus all the fancy trimmings? Remember in Asian décor, there’s no room for plush Victorian-inspired bed covers - less is more every single time.

And another thing, brace yourself for an explosion of green, blue and beige along with several surprise streaks of glittering gold or blood red pieces. These are the popular colors that dominate Asian styles. Are you a Barbie-fanatic or a huge Barney fan? Then you might want to reconsider because Asian designs are not known for their affinity for pinks or purples.

So you think you can handle these major must-do’s? If so, then let’s begin capturing the essence of a warm and relaxing Asian-inspired retreat, beginning with these simple steps.

Firstly, do away with all the trappings and trendy furnishings that you already have. You need a space that is relatively spacious and simple. Be ready to give all your beloved lacy table-tops away. Next, provide a clear setting for your design by painting your walls in hues of beige or bamboo green. Instead of blinds, why not use bamboo to shade the room from too much sun? Hand-woven mats and Asian rugs can also take the place of your regular carpet too.

Once this is done, you can now begin incorporating other stuff to complete your Asian theme. However, you might find this a bit difficult too because there are different styles and cultural designs to choose from. You can go totally Chinese or pick something that has an Indonesian vibe to it. It depends entirely on your preference. Decide on a particular kind of Asian style that best reflects who you are. Remember, guests should not walk into your home feeling as if they are in a section of the national museum. Make sure your personality echoes throughout your home design. Still confused? Don’t fret, it’s quite alright to combine themes from those styles you feel comfortable with.

When it comes to giving your bedroom the Asian treatment, here are some useful tips. Instead of a fancy headboard why not utilize a bed frame that is lower than your usual preference. It would also be nice to experiment a bit. Discard your flower-printed bed cover and replace this with a simple quilt. Then throw in a couple of pillows with Asian designs to complete the look. A plain little bench in the corner of the room can also serve as a table top for studying or other purposes. You can also add some candles or fortune plants and bamboos to enhance the mood for meditation. To compliment this set-up, an Oriental painting or exquisite scrolls pinned up on the wall would pretty much do the trick.

With regard to your living room or dining space, there are a couple of suggestions I’d like to offer to make these rooms feel undoubtedly “Asian”. To start, why not discard your usual sofa set for something that has straight simple lines? An alternative dining setting would also involve having a low table with several plus-size cushions in place of your regular chairs. While you go about with your home make-over session, adapt several Feng Shui principles as well. To avoid ruining the Asian vibe, camouflage those electronic gadgets behind a nice piece of furniture that will double as an entertainment center in the living room. Have fun being Asian!

Umbrella Companies and Their it Contractors Given Reprieve by Government

Umbrella Companies

After the Pre Budget statement, the Treasury released this statement

5.104 Following the consultation Tax relief for travel expenses: temporary workers and overarching employment contracts, the Government have decided to leave the current rules unchanged. However, in the light of evidence from the consultation confirming poor levels of compliance in this area HMRC will refocus its efforts to ensure that the current regime is properly applied. If compliance does not improve, the Government may return to this at a later date.

Catching Renegades

So, it looks as if those consulted have managed to convince the Government not to legislate on this.

The focus is going to be on catching those companies that stretch the rules on expenses beyond the boundaries.

The Government has also said that they could re-look at it again in the future if those at the edge aren’t reined in.

However, this is very good news for both IT Contractors and Umbrella Companies.

If the Government had changed the rules on that the Umbrella Companies could just have become payroll companies.

Great News

Said Rob Crosland of top Umbrella Company Parasol:-

This is great news for contractors who work for Parasol and means that the risks that contractors take in finding work, traveling and working hard have been recognized. Treasury goes on to suggest that HMRC will refocus its efforts on ensuring poor levels of compliance are addressed - a measure Parasol wholeheartedly agrees with and promoted as the correct solution through lobbying and consultation directly and via the Service Providers Association (SPA).

Parasol has always promoted the accurate and ethical claiming of expenses and has never put contractor’s livelihoods at risk. In some ways, the news in today’s PBR vindicates that stance.

We will continue to work with HM Treasury and HMRC to ensure contractors and freelancers unique place in the UK economy is recognized and understood. We welcome this sensible approach by the Government in times which are already challenging enough.

PCG

The Professional Contractors Group put out a statement saying the following:-

There was good news, however, for freelancers concerned at the prospect of aggressive legislation on umbrella companies' and agencies' expenses. Mr. Brazier said: "PCG advised the Government not to pursue either of the courses of action it proposed - we are pleased that it is focusing on making the existing rules work properly as we recommended."

According to Compliance Manager, Mike Grey, at Umbrella Company Paymasters:-

"This is excellent news for contractors and quite rightly recognizes and rewards the entrepreneurial spirit of contractors in seeking out new work and traveling to and from varied assignments. Often contractors do incur significant costs for travel and/or overnight stays and it is only right that these should be recognized in calculating their tax liability".

"In the past the industry has been criticized for encouraging contractors to claim for all expenses they could be entitled to just to minimize their tax liability. Clearly this practice is wrong. At Pay Matters we feel it is important that relief for expenses are claimed but only when they are incurred "wholly, exclusively and necessary in performing your duties". Clearly traveling to a client's premises is often critical for the work to be performed and correctly supervised by the client".

360 Groups

Brian Keegan, MD of 360 Group says;

"This proves that government has listened on this occasion and that maintaining a flexible working model is key to seeing UK PLC through these challenging times".

Keegan goes on to say "Following the consultation Government now has a better understanding of the vital role umbrella organizations play and that umbrellas do not exist purely to provide tax savings to workers. Umbrella providers now have the opportunity to prove that we have a legitimate place in the economy and demonstrating ongoing compliance with HMRC rules is essential.”

360 group, like other interested parties has been heavily involved in the consultation process and sought to provide feedback from agencies and end clients to Her Majesty’s Treasury about the real benefits professional employer organizations can provide.

If anyone would like a copy of the 360 group consultation submission October 2008 please email Toni Carter on t.carter@360-group.com.

Danbro

Said Damian Broughton of Danbro:-

"Contractors will particularly welcome the decision not to change the rules on expenses. If they operate through an umbrella company, choosing one with 100% HMRC compliance status, like Danbro, will give them confidence that their expenses arrangements will meet with the taxman’s approval.”

Thailand Retreats: Sedhapura Villa by Tohsang

Sedhpura Villa, a firm favourite of ZiZ Asia and A Member of the Isan Boutique Collection

Sedhapura, a mesmerizing and remote luxury villa retreat on Thailand’s less-travelled Northeastern frontier where the Mekong River carves the boundary separating Thailand with Southern Laos.  A mystical region steeped in history, legends and mythology, the peacefulness and serenity intoxicates the very air one breathes.

Exhausted from the violence of its course through Tibet, the Mekong River receives a docile stimulant at its confluence with the Mun (Moon) River before it meanders timelessly From Thailand into Southern Laos, charting its course to the lands of Angkor, the Tonle Sap and onwards to the end of its journey in Vietnam and the South China Sea.

There are few places that truly epitomize the ultimate escape but Sefhapura is certainly one of them; void of crowds, as far removed from the tourist trail as can be and as naturally luxurious as it is resplendent.  Not just a confluence of rivers but also of nations, cultures and cuisine.

Located adjacent to the border settlement of Woen Buk Village in the province of Ubon Ratchathani, Thais intermingle with Laotians, Khmer and Vietnamese, an eclectic mix that has produced a unique culinary fusion, a product of evolution and a paradise for Asia food enthusiasts, gourmets and culinary anthropologists.

Sedhapura distils stress, evaporates the routinely mundane and revitalizes ones soul.  There is something surreally majestic about the place, the forest-carpeted mountains, the Mighty Mekong and, not least, the rarefied surroundings of the villas themselves; the peacefulness, the romance, the serenity.

The Villas

Created and managed by the Tohsang Hotel Group, Sedhapura consists of 4 villas, three of which are bungalows and the fourth a duplex.  Each villa features privacy . . . as well as a King-sized bed, private dining, a 4m x 3m private plunge pool and all have unadulterated views over the Mekong and the distant verdantly green mountains of Southern Laos.

Contemporary Thai in style, clean, white-washed walls are framed with natural wooden beams.  White fabric cascades from the ceilings to floor-level to shroud daybeds beneath them.  The interiors provide the perfect balance of furnishings whilst avoiding unnecessary excess and combine the same earthy wooden colours with traditional Isaan floor cushions.  Gentle up-lighting echoes the subtleties of nature found beyond the four walls.  The focal point is of course the terrace where hours can be whiled away absorbing the views.

An intimate family-run business, the villas are in close proximity to the Tohsang Khongjiam Resort where you have use of the facilities including its restaurants and meeting rooms.  Alternatively nurture the reclusive ambiance of your villa and order an alfresco, riverside candlelit dinner on the terrace from where you can absorb the kaleidoscope of technicolor dancing over the Mekong’s evening sheen.

Events

Understandably, Sedhapura is a paradise for Honeymooners looking to totally escape the maddening crowds and retreat into their own private ideal.  Conjoined with the Tohsang Khongjiam Resort and you are also presented with an idyllically romantic riverside wedding venue where all your needs are met at this, the place that is first to witness the sun rising each day in Thailand.

Corporate Retreats are also well catered for at Sedhapura where you can host informal meetings within your villa or opt for one of three meeting rooms and facilities provided at the Tohsang Khongjiam Resort:

The Kanadol Meeting Room – 12m x 15m and can accommodate 120 guests in theatre style seating.

The Club House – 9m x 10m and can accommodate 30 guests in theatre style seating.

The Garden Terrace Meeting Room – 8m x 6m and can accommodate 10 guests in theatre style seating.

Activities

Explore Southern Laos - Trips can easily be made across the border into Laos.  It’s not often that tours offer the opportunity for time travel as well but this is one of them. The border crossing delivers you into Champasak Province of which the capital is Pakse.  To do this thoroughly you should really allocate at least 3 days and 2 nights.

Spa & Massage – Enhance the tranquillity of Sedhapura with a traditional Thai Massage or Spa Treatment.  Choose from a menu of Spa Treatments that include Body contour, Anti-Stress and Sensual Spa to achieve a deep calm. Do experience the Thai massage on the floating sundeck.  It’s not to be missed.

Dining - Ubon Ratchanthani is renowned for its food and connoisseurs of Southeast Asian cuisine will be in their seventh heaven.  Find out what happens when Thai food collides with Khmer, Vietnamese and Laos cuisine; it is like a little rave going on in your mouth.  Dining at Sedhapura is a treat with a full Thai and International menu and if you can tear yourself away from the views, the candlelit table and terrace a trip into Ubon to indulge your taste buds at one of the many restaurants and bars is certainly worthwhile.

Thai Cooking Course - Monopolise the Chef at Sedhapura for a private Thai cooking course.  As our ditty “You can visit as a tourist but its best visited as an enthusiast” and this is particularly true where Thai Cooking is concerned.  There is nothing quite like learning to cook a Thai menu on holiday to impress your friends upon your return.

Biking – Exploring by bicycle or hired motorcycle gives you the ultimate freedom to take things at your own pace. Visit villages, national parks, waterfalls, temples, museums and much, much more.

Nature & Landscape Photography - The area is an Eden for photographic enthusiasts particularly if nature and landscape photography is your speciality.  From sunrise to sunset the photographic opportunities are limitless. Just fall out of bed and start shooting.  You cant really fail, the backdrops are everywhere.

Trekking & Hiking - Trekkers are simply spoilt for choice with all the national parks in the vicinity. Trek to viewpoints, waterfalls, flower meadows, rock paintings and caves and remote forest Temples.  The trails are generally well defined and the going not overly challenging but if you want to get up to the most spectacular viewpoints a certain level of fitness is clearly required.

Mekong Cruise - Take a river cruise to see the confluence of the Mekong and Mun Rivers which create what locals refer to as the “Coloured River”.  The river cruise can take you to visit the Weon Beak Village, and Kaeng Tana National Park.

Fishing - Take to the waters of the Mighty Mekong for a days fishing.  A Panama hat, a parasol, a picnic, some beers maybe and you have the ingredients to create a wonderfully memorable day afloat on the Mekong.  Whether or not you catch a fish becomes almost immaterial.

Numerous attractions exist in Ubon Ratchathani and we have only highlighted a few of the activities that you could indulge in.  Temple visit, prehistoric rock paintings, waterfalls and museums are certainly items to add to the list.

Ubon Ratchathani

Ubon Ratchathani is the eastern most province in Thailand’s less travelled North eastern Isaan region. Home to a range of impressive national parks including Pha Taem National Park which is famous for its numerous prehistoric rock drawings, waterfalls and verdant forests, the Mekong River also flows through it.  The capital of the province is its namesake; City of the Lotus.

Despite being completely below Thailand’s mass tourism radar the area yields much to do with plenty of exploring to be had.  Admittedly the advent of the Chong Mek / Vang Tao border crossing has magnetized a few more independent travellers to Ubon but the area is still perceived as a one-night stop-over as opposed to a destination in its own right which is bitter sweet; sweet where retreatists are concerned.

Previously the province of Ubon Ratchathani was a pilgrimage for remote meditation, individuals removing themselves for civilisation to retreat at a forest Wat (Temple) for weeks or even months and in the same way that these forest Wats are still highly regarded, the meditative aura hangs like a veil over what has to be one of the loveliest and most serene parts of the world.

Sorties into Champasak Province in Southern Laos and to the town of Pakse make for intriguing adventure.  While Ubon certainly lacks the modern polished sophistication of the world leading cities, Southern Laos really is like entering a time warp and, sadly, now an infinitely more authentic experience than Luang Prabang.

When to Go

For the Retreatist there is no right or wrong time to escape.  The calling is all that is required.  As far as seasons are concerned though, the rainy season runs from May to October, the cool season from October to January and the hot season from February to May.  The cool season arrives earlier in Ubon Ratchathani than any other Thai Province because of its geographical location.

One of the most magical times to visit Ubon Ratchathani though is in August when Pha Taem National Park explodes into a dazzling floral palette of colour and waterfalls such as Ru and Sang Chen are in full flow.

Ubon Ratchathani also hosts the annual candle festival in July which consists of a parade of huge, oversized and intricately carved candles.  Very popular with Thais and if you are at Sedhapura in July the Candle Festival is definitely worth a peek.

If you would like to plan an outdoor wedding at Sedhapura any time during the cool season would be best. Guests may suffer during outdoor weddings in the hot season and sweating during the ceremony is arguably a little premature.

How Long to Go for

How long do you need?  Nature lovers and trekkers would be reluctant to leave after a week knowing that there is still much that they haven’t seen or done.  For those venturing to Sedhapura for a Spa Retreat you will doubtless intensify your treatments to beat the anxiety of having to return to normality and pure Retreatists will soon become Spa Retreatists for the very same reasons.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach Sedhapura is by plane from Bangkok.  Other means include overnight train or car but in both cases the journey is long and fairly arduous.  Ubon Ratchathani is currently serviced by Thai Airways, Air Asia and Nok Air with approximately five flights a day.

Home Decor - What Does Your Style Say About You?

When it comes to home decor, everyone has different tastes.  Some love modern or contemporary, while others love country, rustic or the romantic style of shabby chic.  What does your favorite decor say about you?   More than you may think!

If you love modern styling, you are more than likely a no nonsense person who likes everything straight and to the point.  This type of home decor often consists of simple, sparse furnishings with straight lines and minimal fuss.

Those who are crazy about shabby chic decor are often romantic at heart.  This style exudes a soft and airy feeling, with a romantic look.  Pastels and a worn or washed look add old charm to this style.  Furniture is often whitewashed and worn around the edges.  Chandeliers, plant stands, candles and all other accents are usually a tad on the feminine side.

Do you love exotic or Asian colors and accents?  If you are one who loves a look that is anything but traditional, you are probably a bold person yourself.  Rich colors are often used in this decor.  Reds, golds, blacks, burnt orange - like the colors in this decor, you are more than likely no shrinking violet.  Asian and exotic styling demands attention, and will not be ignored.  Does this sound like you?

Then we come to country home decor.  This style is commonly used by people who are extremely warm and friendly.  The more company, the better!  You have a place in your home and your heart for anyone and everyone.  This look is charming, comfortable and welcoming, just like you.  You enjoy nothing better than having a kitchen full of visitors, waiting to eat a slice of your homemade apple pie.

You can see how peoples personalities often lend to the style of decor they choose.  When it comes to decorating the place you call home, make sure it represents what you want it to say!  Your home decor is much closer related to your personal traits and characteristics than you probably realize.
